Xavier Encinas

Xavier Encinas

As a French citizen living in Canada, I often think about the influence of my home country aesthetic on my design approach, and I realize that none of the iconographic history or the work of great French graphic designers drives my work. However, in this instance, the desire to express my citizenship came naturally to me.

In today’s world of globalization, languages travel as much as humans and when two of the most used languages across the globe cross paths, funny things happen.

The French use many English words in their everyday conversations. Those words in some situations may sound inappropriate and even clumsy to English speakers. The same situation occurs when French words are used in English conversation.

This poster is a very simple list of French words commonly used in English. Today the boundary between these two languages seems blurry.

This poster is set using Bifur. French poster artist Adolphe Mouron Cassandre originally designed this emblematic typeface in 1929 as a single font and also as a two-part, two-color font. The P22/IHOF version (used here) adds a lower case while keeping the upper case and all original characters true to the original design.

Xavier Encinas is a French Art Director living and working in Vancouver, BC. After graduating in 2003 with a Master’s Degree in New Technologies, Xavier started his career in graphic design, crafting websites for small companies, promoting art exhibitions and creating personal typography projects.
