Sanjit Fernandes+Bakshi

When I moved to the United States I tried to blend in and not attract attention to myself. As my opinions of America formed, so did a deeper understanding and appreciation of Canada’s strengths and weaknesses, and my own.

I sought to objectify how I fit in my new country and the way I felt about leaving Canada. Each point on this poster marked a location, time, photograph, snippet of text or a texture from my electronic and analog journals. Experiences were graphed using a number of variables, but they still spoke of emotion.

As layers of information, time, texture, and photos were removed from the mapping I ended with an uneasy skeleton of my learning. Even with nothing on the page except for empty markings I still felt the same as I had before. The mappings were recreated, connecting each dialog, experience, point.

To strip away who I’m not, to try and look at the essence of who I am, leaves me always dreaming about home.

Born in Canada to Indian parents, Sanjit studied at the University of Alberta in Edmonton before moving on to a Bachelor’s degree at Emily Carr University. He worked for several years at Signals Design Group in Vancouver and relocated briefly to Los Angeles. He now lives in San Francisco.
