Identity has to involve the other, or someone, to experience and establish who you are.
I keep going back to my identity and my otherness and seeing that this had a lot to do with how I relate to the rest of the world. And certainly, it seems topical at this point in our political history.
My identity is tied up in this land, the culture, the meaning of the word “American.” I see where I’ve lived—France, Canada, and now the USA—as one of the greatest contributors to my formation.
I see that my vision of the world has always been buried in my heritage as an American—this is the lens through which I’ve experienced all other cultures.
So I see my identity blowing apart, being diverse, unclear and mystic. It relates to who I am individually, who I am as part of a greater culture and who I am to other cultures across the world.
It is both fascinating and frightening, but it is who I am.
