They say to be yourself, as though it’s the embodiment of something, a gift you might one day surprise yourself with. A tangible, immovable thing that will materialise no matter what.

Maybe it is that, an obscure presence lurking in the shadows, shaped by the steady hands of loved ones and the fleeting grasp of strangers. Maybe it’s brought to light at times by the stinging glare of defeat or the quiet glow of happiness.

And maybe it becomes real the day you become aware of it, shadowing you, in whatever place you experience being yourself as something essential. As an act of remembrance of the people, the lands and the lessons and aspirations that have made you whole.

In Eastern Ontario, there’s an electric, energizing wind that comes up, signaling the impending violence of late summer storms and the cleansing release of heavy rain.

I believe it might be following me, finding me wherever I live, in case I forget.

Isabelle Swiderski has been a designer for over fifteen years working in Paris, London, Ottawa and Vancouver independently and in large and small design studios for clients such as Douglas & McIntyre, HarperCollins, Solo Mobile and BCAA. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Emily Carr University and a Master’s Degree in Communication Design from the Royal College of Art.

Isabelle founded Seven25. Design & Typography—a design consultancy specialising in work for not-for-profit and cultural organisations—in 2000 and has been sessional lecturer at Emily Carr University since 2003.
